-Please introduce yourself and give us a brief summary of your work experience.

I'm XXXXXX 29 years old.
I graduated from Supinfocom Arles (France) in 2006 and I built 5 years
experience of Computer graphics production in Japan.
In january 2007 I worked 1 year as a cg Generalist in a start up new studio with my friend.
After spending a year and half with Polygon pictures as a Layout artist, my
skills for story telling has been polished.
In mid 2009 I decided to become a freelance artist in which I had a chance
to direct and to manage production as a CG Generalist.
My last experience in Japan was between November 2010 and August 2011 when I
was working as a Lighting TD in Square Enix.

Supinfocom

-What was your job title and your responsibilities? How long did you work in Japan?

I worked in Japan for almost 5 years.

-In general, how did you feel about working in Japan?(or more specifically, pros and cons?)

After I started freelancing in 2009 and that I could have the trust of some
of the clients I felt very comfortable and happy working in Japan.
during the time I was a freelance artist and while I was in Square enix I
could let my creativity express. I felt my potential used properly and I
could learn a lot at the same time.
So I ended my experience in Japan on my best feet. I'm very happy.

HOWEVER The two first year was a big shock for me.
I was fresh from school but I realized that even big companies would have
huge trouble of management. (for example to start modeling without having a
storyboard / to never set their mind and start doing something that we will
have to be redo from A to Z later).
All of those wrong process which will bring extreme deadline and crazy
overtime.
To be honnest at that time I couldn't believe my eyes such decisions were
done.
My friend and I were advising and pushing at every meeting the right
step for a CG production but we could never really transmit our knowledge.
We felt down because of that.
The project was a big lose of money, a big potential thrown by the window
and we didn't know what to say to improve the situation. They would not
listen.
I believe the ego of the company was the main issue.

To sum up, I think that if you are on your own as a freelance artist, or if
you are inside a company which as a solid pipeline. Working in Japan as a
foreigner is very enjoyable.
Only some few hierarchy problems will occur but it didn't bother me much.

-What do you think are the differences between the working styles of Japanese companies and western-based companies?

I don't know if I'm the best person to answer that questions since I worked
only few months in professional environment in France.
I'm not sure that what I'm gonna say apply as a generality in all company
across the globe. I just write down how I felt with my experience.

It seems that overseas, great ideas are never far away. Everyone as a chance
to grow.
Of course the hierarchy is important to direct a project but the best idea
wins, no matter who came up with it.
It creates an environment where everybody is happy to contribute with
something. You feel part of the project and you are more willing to give
your heart, it keeps you more excited.
It makes me remember when I was a student and that everybody was helping
each other to achieve their goals.
In Japanese company you feel more isolated, a little bit cut from the
overall, you feel like an antz doing is job. This make your day a little bit
long.

There are also some differences like make your work condition more
comfortable to produce better result.
Some Japanese company doesn't care much about your health, your work space
or the overtime you do for free. They expect you to give your life to them.
The longer you stay at work the better they look at you, I don't share this
point of view and I prefer to be in best health to use my full potential.

-What elements do you think Japanese companies should change to improve the working experience of foreign artists?

I would say to be more open to the way foreigner do things, to let some
space for our ideas. To trust foreigner.
To improve work condition (depending the company, I was quiet happy with
Square enix)
Eventually to implement an accessible langage for us. For example English.
I probably have more things to say but it doesn't pop up in my mind right
now.

-What elements do you think are necessary in an artist if he/she wants to work in Japan?

Love for Japan, understanding the culture, patience, and to know Japanese
language.

-Including myself, many Japanese artists have been leaving the country to work overseas. How do you feel about this?
Personally for me it was a hard decision to leave Japan. I miss Japan and my
friends there a lot. I spent a very positive experience in Japan and I'm
cherishing this.

We always says: "the grass is greener on the other side of the fence". But
in leaving Japan I didn't expect to find something better but something
different.
We all know nowhere is really perfect, the only good choice is to follow
what your heart guide you.
I follow my heart and I decided to leave Japan to be with my family and more
recently to build a more stable situation with my wife who is Malaysian.

-Please give a message to those who are willing to work in Japan or those Japanese artists who want to work outside of Japan.

The hardest is to make the decision to make the positive change in your
life.
Once the decision is made and you are happy with it, you'll be happy, you'll
make your friends and family happy and every obstacles on your way will
appear to be easy to go over... like a game.

To start a new life in an "unknown" country is extremely rich and will bring
you better understanding, not only about your career but also on yourself.
This experience helps to build up self confidence as well, However in order
to get the best of the experience of it, we have to open our mind and our
heart to differences.
I wish those peoples who are willing to leave their country to find a career
overseas all my best and not too worry because nothing can go wrong.

-Please introduce yourself and give us a brief summary of your work experience.

I'm XXXXXXXX, I'm from Barcelona, Spain, where I start working as
animator and layout/previs artist, until I applied to work as layout artist
for Polygon Pictures in Tokyo in 2008.
After that I was working as layout artist and animator in Barcelona,
Stockholm, London, and I went to Tokyo as previs artist a second time in
2011.
I'm actually working in London, as layout artist at MPC films
(http://www.moving-picture.com/).

-What was your job title and your responsibilities? How long did you work in Japan?

I've been twice in Japan, the first time I was layout artist for Polygon
Pictures for the TV show: My friend Winnie and Pooh for one year.
The second time I was previs/layout artist for the TV show Transformers
Prime for six months.

最初はポリゴンピクチャーズにて1年間、テレビの「My friend Winnie and Pooh for one year」のレイアウトを行いました。

-In general, how did you feel about working in Japan?(or more specifically, pros and cons?)

It's difficult to me write a list of pros and cons because most of the
things I would write would be in both list at the same time.
For example the best of working in Japan was the opportunity to live and
work in a completely different environment. That was really inspiring, and
help me to ground up as a professional and person as well. And was one of
the hardest things I ever did!
I love the challenges, and learn new things, so I was very happy to have the
chance to do it in a country with a long tradition in animation.
But the challenges are hard, and the way to do the things is different every
place you go.

-What do you think are the differences between the working styles of Japanese companies and western-based companies?

The hardest thing was the way the Japanese see the work, and what it
represents in their life, this is the biggest difference.
As an European, I'm used to optimize my work time to be more productive, to
try to work more effectively in less time. As well the deadlines are more
"generous" than the Japanese ones.
In Japan I've seen that for lot of people the important is to be at the
office, even if they have finish their work. It's a cultural thing that for
the foreigners is hard to understand.

-What elements do you think Japanese companies should change to improve the working experience of foreign artists?

The communication, I think that for Japanese the feedback is something that
must be said one by one, and people doesn't talk about other people work.
In Europe we use to be all team in a room reviewing and giving feedback of
the work of everyone. This improves the relation between the team mates, and
is very useful to know the feedback of everyone, because it can be useful
 for your shots as well.

-What elements do you think are necessary in an artist if he/she wants to work in Japan?

An open mind, patience, and respect. It's important to observe people
behaviour to avoid misunderstandings.

-Including myself, many Japanese artists have been leaving the country to work overseas. How do you feel about this?

I think that work in a multicultural environment is always inspiring. You
have people with different points of view, and in a creative work this is
always good.

-Please give a message to those who are willing to work in Japan or those Japanese artists who want to work outside of Japan.

If you have an open mind, and you like to travel, don't be afraid, just do
it!
Be easy going, respect the way people work wherever you go, and try to be
yourself all the time.
To have respect doesn't mean to bow whatever people say to you. Means to
make an effort to understand why they are saying it to you.

XXXXXXXXXX, I left a job as a 3D supervisor at Animal Logic to come to Japan in 2006. Since then I've worked at Polygon Pictures as a lighting artist initially, then layout supervisor on a TV series. TV work is pretty rough so I switched over to Square-Enix to work in their cinematics department late in 2009. I'm still there now doing lighting and compositing.

-In general, how did you feel about working in Japan?(or more specifically, pros and cons?)
Japan has been a great experience in terms of meeting people I wouldn't otherwise have had the chance to, and Tokyo is an amazing city to live in...no crime, incredible transport, great food, cheap beer, festivals and events year-round, the only downside is the lack of trees and grass.

From a work perspective it's a bit hit and miss...mostly miss. The CG industry here is linked to the anime industry, which means no money and long hours. It's not really a white-collar job. Few Japanese studios have really advanced facilities. Basically you're stepping back in time 5-10 years depending on the company, and the salaries are 50-70% of what they would be overseas.

-What do you think are the differences between the working styles of Japanese companies and western-based companies?

There are big difference between companies overseas, and the same can be said of studios here, so it's difficult to make generalizations. Some companies here are very organized, others are total chaos, it's like anywhere. The big difference I've noticed is that people here tend to be very conservative in adopting new technology. the Japanese I've dealt with are quick to focus on potential downsides and risks, and often the first setback will mean the end of testing. "If it aint broke, don't fix it" is rule number 1 here. That's not to say there's absolutely no development here, but it happens much much slower than overseas.

-What elements do you think Japanese companies should change to improve the working experience of foreign artists?

If they want to improve the working conditions of foreign artists they should stop hiring them. Unless you're working in a sweatshop in a developing nation, coming to Japan will be a big step down in pay and working conditions. If someone wants to work here for whatever reason, they've got to be willing to deal with the same conditions as the locals. So really the question isn't what companies can do to improve the working conditions of foreigners, it's a question of what can be done to improve the working conditions for everyone. Most of that comes down to profitability, but simple things like respect for people's overtime and weekend work tends to be lacking, it's just expected that artists will do it.

-What elements do you think are necessary in an artist if he/she wants to work in Japan?

Patience. Japan is a weird country and people do things in very specific ways here. It takes a lot of time to learn all that,  so your first year here will be a comedy of errors. You probably won't understand what anyone is saying, and chances are they won't understand you either, so patience first and foremost is a must have.

-Including myself, many Japanese artists have been leaving the country to work overseas. How do you feel about this?

I think it's great! People really need to get out and experience the world..that's true for everyone, not just Japanese CG artists. I imagine it would be very tough to come back to the Japanese CG industry after working overseas though.

-Please give a message to those who are willing to work in Japan or those Japanese artists who want to work outside of Japan.

If you're coming to have an adventure and experience life in a really cool country, I think it's a great idea. If you're looking for a career opportunity or to develop your reel, I'm not sure I would recommend the Japanese industry. Square is a good company to work for and the projects we do are really cool, but very few people here speak english, and there's not much interest in hiring non-japanese speaking artists unfortunately (software engineers are another story). So if you really want to succeed in Japan, I'd say hit the nihongo textbooks.

For japanese artists I'd say the same thing, just spend your weekends learning english. Artists here are just as talented as any I've worked with, so getting work overseas is just a question of english ability and good timing.

I was a 3DCG animator, doing character animation on a TV series and a
bit of layout as well.

-In general, how did you feel about working in Japan?(or more specifically, pros and cons?)

It was a very good experience, socially speaking. I met nice, humble,
hard-working people, learned to work faster and cut to the chase. But
the general project lacked organization, and from a foreigner point of
vue, efficient communication. People don't speak out their opinions
much here.

-What do you think are the differences between the working styles of Japanese companies and western-based companies?

Mainly specialization and organization. Western companies share the
work more evenly between artists, whose individual skills are used
where it should. Yet they give you a chance to improve within a team
of seniors and juniors, with a more involved lead. All degrees of
skills and experience are important. Also overtime or weekend work is
carried out only when necessary, and remunarated along with holidays.
This way you avoid the burn-out and remain efficient. Japanese
companies employ more polyvalent artists, and it's definitely better
for small projects or commercials. Pipelines are less heavy. And
though the hierarchy is very present, I felt more creativity.

-What elements do you think Japanese companies should change to improve the working experience of foreign artists?

Listen to the experience foreign artists can bring and take the best from it.

-What elements do you think are necessary in an artist if he/she wants to work in Japan?

Be open. Be assiduous. And most importantly, be humble. But Id' say
that for working in any country.

-Including myself, many Japanese artists have been leaving the country to work overseas. How do you feel about this?

I know it's very difficult when you have a family, but it's very
enriching ! We can only improve our work and open our minds when going
to different companies and sharing with different artists.

-Please give a message to those who are willing to work in Japan or those Japanese artists who want to work outside of Japan.

If you have the opportunity, go for it, come for the change of scene
rather than the job, don't have too high expectations and enjoy it.

-Please introduce yourself and give us a brief summary of your work experience.

I've started seriously drawing and painting about 20 years ago. I went to art college and worked with pencils, paints and watercolors as well as prints and eventually computers. Professionally I started of as an illustrator but quickly moved into computer games as a modeller and texture artist. I became increasingly technical and my last 3 jobs have been as a VFX TD.

-What was your job title and your responsibilities? How long did you work in Japan?

I worked for several years as a game artist in a small company in Osaka before briefly working as a TD for a group of freelancers. It must have been 5 years altogether.

-In general, how did you feel about working in Japan?(or more specifically, pros and cons?)

Working in Japan can be hard but also very interesting. Most of the difficulty for me was with noise. It's hard to explain but I find Japanese offices quite noisy. Living in Japan is quite good actually. I love the predictable weather, excellent restaurants, quirky everythings, onsen, and a thousand other things.
And hey, stop living your life staring at mobile phones. Just saying. ;)

-What do you think are the differences between the working styles of Japanese companies and western-based companies?
Small companies work very much in a similar manner but there is a huge difference when compared to large western facilities. Clients in Japan want very fast results and often require major changes at the last minute. The Japanese are remarkable at what the can produce but it only works up to a point. You cannot pump out Avatar quality CG on a shoestring budget with a brief that changes 150% at 11.55pm.

The dynamics of big projects is completely different. It is much more methodical and resource intensive than what you have at most, or any shop at all. Imagine spending weeks on a single effect, even months, with all the staff and hardware. You need big clients with deep pockets to do this.

-What elements do you think Japanese companies should change to improve the working experience of foreign artists?
Speak English! If you want to work internationally it is necessary to use an international language. It's difficult, it's inconvenient but that's the way it is. English isn't my mother tongue nor that of many of my coworkers but it is so important yet so lacking in Japan. However, if you have mostly local or national clients, of course it is not necessary.

-What elements do you think are necessary in an artist if he/she wants to work in Japan?
Be lucky. I don't know of any secret sauce to making it in Japan. Some fail, some succeed, and luck has a lot do with. Try and see!

-Including myself, many Japanese artists have been leaving the country to work overseas. How do you feel about this?

It is a global industry and everybody moves around all the time. It is a problem in the sense that we find it hard to settle down and live a normal life. I wish there was a serious international movie industry in Japan. I really believe that you have some of the most amazing artists in the world. You are dedicated, hard working and never complaining people and how great it would be to produce world class vfx in Japan.

Build a Pixar studio in Yakushima and I'd drop everything and go there in a heart beat! Seriously, forget Tokyo, it's small, expensive and stressful. Plonk a bunch of artists and a world class facility into the gorgeous Japanese countryside and I guarantee you first class quality at low cost, with happy staff, family and businessmen. That is my dream!

-Please give a message to those who are willing to work in Japan or those Japanese artists who want to work outside of Japan.

Try it, but have a backup plan my dear friends.

-Please introduce yourself and give us a brief summary of your work experience.

My name is Jason Ho. I am a Singaporean currently working in the US for Blue Sky Studios. I've also worked at Industrial Light + Magic in San Francisco prior to joining Blue Sky.

-What was your job title and your responsibilities? How long did you work in Japan?
I work as an animator at Blue Sky Studios and we're supposed to animate for the project that we're in. I worked in Japan for 4 months only.
-In general, how did you feel about working in Japan?(or more specifically, pros and cons?)

I was very lucky to work for the people who came from Square USA. My immediate boss was very open to running his team through the western approach so I was spared a lot of Japanese workplace cultures which can be quite counter productive at times.

-What do you think are the differences between the working styles of Japanese companies and western-based companies?
The company that I was working in was quite small, so we were more or less required to do more generalist work whereas in western-based companies tends to pigeon hole you into your skill set.

Another thing I noticed is that they weren't very open to suggestions and opinions from 'junior' people. At the same time, there could be a lot of reasons for that. (Scheduling restrictions or maybe the client has something very specific in mind)

-What elements do you think Japanese companies should change to improve the working experience of foreign artists?

First thing I would say is to change the working hours of CG companies. Most companies usually start super late (around 10am - 11am) and ends their day at 9-11pm. This leaves the artists with completely no personal life after work hours. Psychologically, it would burn the artist out very quickly and would therefore impact the artists' productivity in the long run.

Be more open to ideas from employees and encourage idea brainstorming within the artists. It would definitely help the team grow as a whole.

-What elements do you think are necessary in an artist if he/she wants to work in Japan?

1) Speak Japanese. If not, work for a company that has translators.
2) Good health. Trust me, you're going to need it to last there.
3) Be open to their culture. The Japanese are very different culturally as compared to the western society.

-Including myself, many Japanese artists have been leaving the country to work overseas. How do you feel about this?

I don't think that's the case. A lot of Japanese artists I know tend to stay in their own country for multiple reasons. Language being the main reason they shy away from applying to western companies. I do feel that the companies should definitely think of a new approach to making the artist's lives better if they are serious about building on their animation/growing industry.

-Please give a message to those who are willing to work in Japan or those Japanese artists who want to work outside of Japan.

To those who want to go to Japan, be prepared to work long hours. I'd advice you to stand up for your own rights. Asking for a compromise whereby you come in earlier and leave earlier so that you have a normal life.

For those who want to work outside Japan, brush up your English and don't be afraid to take that first step. I personally feel that once you step out, you won't look back.
Thank you for featuring me in your blog!
